Choosing an Air Conditioner

What type of air conditioner is right for my home?

It depends on the size and layout of your home, the areas you want to heat or cool, your local climate, budget and how you use the space. Split systems can be a practical option for individual rooms or specific areas, while ducted systems can provide whole-home comfort through concealed ductwork. Multi-split and other configurations may also suit some homes.

The best solution isn't necessarily the largest or most expensive system. Start with what you need the system to achieve, then consider the equipment.

What's the difference between split-system and ducted air conditioning?

A split system typically conditions one room or area using an indoor unit connected to an outdoor unit. Ducted air conditioning uses a central indoor unit and a network of ducts to distribute conditioned air to multiple rooms.

Split systems can offer lower upfront costs and individual-room control. Ducted systems provide a more integrated whole-home solution and can often be divided into zones.

Is ducted air conditioning worth it?

It can be if you regularly heat or cool several areas of your home and value whole-home comfort, zoning and a less visible indoor system.

For a household that only conditions one or two rooms regularly, individual split systems may be more economical. Your home's design and how you actually use it matter more than simply choosing the more expensive option.

What is a multi-split air conditioner?

A multi-split system connects several indoor units to one outdoor unit. It can allow different rooms to be conditioned independently without requiring a separate outdoor unit for every indoor unit.

It can be useful where ducting isn't practical or outdoor-unit space is limited, although installation complexity and system design need to be considered.

What should I compare between air-conditioning brands?

Look beyond the brand name. Compare appropriate capacity, energy efficiency, operating range, warranty, noise levels, controls, filtration features, after-sales support and availability of servicing and parts.

Different manufacturers have strengths across different products and applications, so the right comparison is often between specific systems for your home, rather than brands in isolation.

Does AC Wise recommend particular air-conditioning brands?

AC Wise is manufacturer-neutral. We work with commercial and sponsored partners, but those relationships don't prevent us from discussing other products, technologies or features that may benefit homeowners.

Our goal is to help you understand your options rather than tell every household to buy the same brand.

What is reverse-cycle air conditioning?

Reverse-cycle air conditioning can both cool and heat your home. In cooling mode it removes heat from inside the home; in heating mode the refrigeration cycle is reversed to transfer heat indoors.

Modern reverse-cycle systems can provide efficient electric heating as well as cooling.

Should I replace an old air conditioner or repair it?

That depends on the age and condition of the system, the fault, repair cost, efficiency and availability of replacement parts.

A relatively new system with an isolated repair may have plenty of useful life remaining. Repeated faults, major component failures or an ageing and inefficient system can make replacement more economical.

Sizing & Heat Load

What size air conditioner do I need?

Air-conditioner capacity should be based on more than floor area alone.

Room size matters, but so do ceiling height, windows, orientation, insulation, construction, local climate, occupancy and heat entering the space.

A professional heat-load assessment considers these factors to determine the heating and cooling capacity your home actually requires.

Can I calculate air-conditioner size using square metres?

Square-metre rules can provide a rough starting point, but they shouldn't be treated as a final system-sizing method.

Two identical-sized rooms can have very different cooling requirements because of windows, orientation, insulation, ceiling height and climate.

For an installation decision, a more complete assessment is preferable.

What is a heat-load calculation?

A heat-load calculation estimates how much heating or cooling a space requires to maintain comfortable indoor conditions.

It considers heat entering and leaving the building through factors such as walls, ceilings, windows, orientation, outdoor conditions, occupancy and air leakage.

It helps an installer select equipment based on the home rather than relying solely on floor area.

What happens if my air conditioner is too small?

An undersized system may struggle to reach the desired temperature during demanding conditions and may need to operate for extended periods.

That can affect comfort and energy consumption and place additional demand on the equipment.

Is a bigger air conditioner always better?

No.

Oversizing can create its own problems, including unnecessary upfront cost, poor temperature control in some applications and inefficient operation.

The objective is not to install the largest unit possible. It's to select appropriate capacity for the actual load.

Why do two installers sometimes recommend different sizes?

They may be making different assumptions about the property or using different sizing methods.

Ask each installer how they determined the recommended capacity and whether they considered factors such as glazing, orientation, insulation and local climate.

A recommendation should have a reason behind it.

Does insulation affect the size of air conditioner I need?

Yes. Insulation reduces heat transfer through the building envelope and can significantly affect heating and cooling loads.

This is why AC Wise considers insulation and home performance part of the air-conditioning conversation rather than treating the unit as an isolated appliance.

Do large windows affect air-conditioner sizing?

They can. Glass can be a significant source of heat gain and heat loss depending on its size, orientation, shading and performance.

Large west-facing windows, for example, can create very different cooling requirements from well-shaded glazing.

Costs, Quotes & Finance

Finance information here is general in nature, not financial or credit advice. AC Wise is not a credit provider. If you're considering finance, seek advice from a licensed financial adviser or credit provider before entering into any agreement.

How much does air conditioning cost in Australia?

Costs vary substantially depending on system type, capacity, brand, installation complexity, property characteristics and location.

A straightforward single split-system installation may cost considerably less than a multi-room or ducted installation, while difficult access, electrical work, long pipe runs or complex ductwork can increase the price.

AC Wise is developing indicative cost guidance to help homeowners understand likely ranges before consuming an installer's time obtaining a site-specific quotation.

Why are air-conditioning quotes so different?

Two quotes may not represent the same solution.

Differences can include equipment, capacity, installation method, ductwork, zoning, electrical work, controls, warranty, access requirements and workmanship.

Compare the scope of work, not just the final number.

What should an air-conditioning quote include?

A good quote should clearly identify the proposed equipment, installation scope, major inclusions and exclusions, price and applicable warranty information.

For larger projects, it should provide enough detail for you to understand what you're actually purchasing rather than simply presenting a total.

Should I get more than one air-conditioning quote?

Comparing quotes can be useful, particularly for larger installations.

However, the objective isn't necessarily to find the lowest price. Compare whether the proposed systems are appropriate, what is included, the installer's credentials and the quality of the explanation you've received.

Is the cheapest air-conditioning quote the best option?

Not necessarily.

A lower price can represent excellent value, but it can also reflect different equipment, scope or installation methods. Understand why one quote costs less before making the decision.

Is AC Wise free for homeowners?

Yes. AC Wise provides homeowners with free information, guidance and access to our enquiry-matching service.

There is no fee to submit an enquiry through AC Wise.

Participating installation partners pay AC Wise for eligible customer enquiries.

Can I finance a new air-conditioning system?

Finance options may be available to eligible customers to spread the cost of an air-conditioning project over time.

Availability, repayment structures, fees, terms and eligibility vary by provider, so consider the total financial commitment rather than the repayment amount alone.

Can installation be included in air-conditioning finance?

Depending on the finance arrangement, eligible project costs may include both equipment and professional installation.

Confirm exactly what is covered by the finance agreement before proceeding.

Can I get a quote before deciding whether to use finance?

Yes, and we think that's the better order.

First understand what your home actually needs and obtain an appropriate installation proposal. You can then consider how you want to pay for it, including whether a finance option is suitable for you.

Does using finance mean I should buy a more expensive system?

No. How you pay for an air-conditioning system shouldn't determine what your home needs.

System selection should still be based on appropriate sizing, property characteristics, efficiency, comfort requirements and your budget.

Can finance cover a ducted air-conditioning system?

Yes. Larger HVAC projects may be eligible for finance depending on the provider, approved amount, participating business and applicable terms.

Should I choose an installer based on whether they offer finance?

Finance can be convenient, but it shouldn't replace the fundamentals of choosing an appropriately licensed and insured professional who is suitable for the work.

AC Wise's matching process focuses on the requirements of the project first.

Does AC Wise provide the finance?

No. AC Wise does not itself provide credit.

Where finance options are made available through the AC Wise ecosystem, the finance is provided by the relevant finance provider and is subject to their eligibility criteria, approval process, fees and terms.

Installation & Licensing

Who can install an air conditioner in Australia?

Air-conditioning work can involve regulated refrigeration and electrical work. The licences and authorisations required depend on the work being performed and the state or territory.

Homeowners should use appropriately licensed professionals for the relevant work.

Why does air-conditioning licensing matter?

Installation involves electrical systems, refrigerants and equipment that needs to operate safely and correctly.

Licensing requirements help ensure regulated work is performed by people with the appropriate qualifications and authorisations.

What does AC Wise check before accepting an installation partner?

AC Wise installation partners undergo verification of relevant licensing and insurance.

We also assess factors such as service capability, areas of operation and suitability for the types of customer enquiries we intend to connect them with.

Are AC Wise installers employees of AC Wise?

No. Installation partners are independent businesses.

AC Wise helps homeowners understand their options and connects suitable enquiries with participating installation partners. The installation contract itself is between the homeowner and the business they choose.

Should I ask an installer for their licence details?

Yes. A reputable professional should be able to explain the licences relevant to the work they're undertaking.

You can also verify applicable licences through the relevant government or regulatory authority.

Does an air conditioner need a dedicated electrical circuit?

Many systems require specific electrical provisions, but requirements depend on the equipment and existing installation.

Your installer or licensed electrician should assess the electrical requirements rather than assuming the existing supply is suitable.

Can I install an air conditioner myself?

Work involving refrigerant handling and electrical connections is regulated and should not be treated as a DIY installation.

Even where equipment is readily available for purchase, installation should be completed by appropriately authorised professionals.

Does AC Wise guarantee an installer's work?

Installation partners are independent businesses responsible for the services they provide and their contractual obligations to customers.

AC Wise's role is to provide guidance, conduct our partner verification process and facilitate suitable connections. We don't replace the consumer protections or responsibilities applying to the business performing the work.

Energy Efficiency & Running Costs

How much does an air conditioner cost to run?

Running cost depends on the system's power consumption, efficiency, electricity tariff, outdoor conditions, temperature setting, home performance and how long it operates.

That's why a single hourly running-cost figure can be misleading.

What temperature should I set my air conditioner to?

There isn't one perfect temperature for every household.

Choose a comfortable setting and avoid unnecessarily large differences between indoor and outdoor temperatures. Small changes to the thermostat can materially affect how hard the system needs to work.

Does turning the temperature very low cool the room faster?

Generally, setting an extremely low target temperature doesn't magically increase the rated capacity of the system.

It can instead cause the unit to continue operating aggressively for longer. Set the temperature you actually want the room to reach.

Are inverter air conditioners more efficient?

Inverter systems can vary compressor output rather than operating only at full output or off.

This allows modern systems to better match changing loads and can improve comfort and efficiency when appropriately selected and operated.

Does solar make air conditioning cheaper to run?

If your solar system is generating electricity while your air conditioner is operating, some of that demand may be supplied by your own generation rather than electricity imported from the grid.

The actual financial benefit depends on generation, household consumption, system demand and your electricity arrangements.

Does zoning save energy with ducted air conditioning?

Zoning can allow you to condition selected areas instead of the entire home at once.

Used appropriately, that can reduce unnecessary conditioning. However, ducted systems need to be designed so airflow and system operation remain within appropriate limits.

How can I make my air conditioner more efficient?

Appropriate sizing, sensible temperature settings, clean filters, effective insulation, shading, reducing unwanted air leakage and only conditioning spaces when necessary can all help.

Efficiency is a combination of equipment, installation, the building and behaviour.

What does the energy-rating label mean?

Energy-rating information helps consumers compare the energy performance of products under standardised conditions.

It's useful for comparison, but actual household energy use will still depend on climate, installation, building characteristics and usage.

Maintenance & Replacement

How often should I clean my air-conditioner filters?

Check the manufacturer's instructions because requirements vary.

Filters in frequently used systems may need attention relatively often, particularly in dusty environments or homes with pets. A dirty filter can restrict airflow and affect performance.

How often should an air conditioner be professionally serviced?

There isn't one universal service interval for every system.

Usage, environment, equipment type and manufacturer recommendations matter. If performance changes, unusual noises or odours develop, or the system shows signs of a fault, have it assessed rather than waiting for a predetermined date.

How long should an air conditioner last?

There is no guaranteed lifespan.

Equipment quality, installation, climate, usage, maintenance and environmental exposure all influence longevity. Some systems operate reliably for many years, while others may require major repairs earlier.

What are the signs my air conditioner may need replacing?

Repeated breakdowns, declining performance, increasing noise, significant component failures, difficulty obtaining parts or poor efficiency can all justify discussing replacement.

That doesn't mean every older system needs replacing.

Why is my air conditioner not cooling properly?

Possible causes range from a dirty filter or incorrect settings to airflow problems, equipment faults or refrigerant-related issues.

Start with simple user checks recommended by the manufacturer. Persistent problems should be assessed by an appropriately qualified technician.

Why is water leaking from my air conditioner?

Condensation is normal during cooling, but water appearing where it shouldn't can indicate drainage problems, contamination, installation issues or other faults.

Switch the system off if necessary to prevent property damage and arrange an inspection.

Why does my air conditioner smell?

Odours can be associated with moisture, contamination, filters, drains or other conditions within the system.

Persistent or unusual smells warrant investigation rather than simply masking them with fragrances.

Should I repair or replace a ten-year-old air conditioner?

Age alone shouldn't determine the decision.

Compare the repair cost, expected remaining life, efficiency, equipment condition, parts availability and replacement cost. A technician can help establish whether you're repairing an otherwise sound system or investing repeatedly in equipment approaching the end of useful service.

Indoor Air Quality

Does air conditioning clean the air?

Air conditioners generally filter recirculated air to some degree, but they shouldn't automatically be considered complete air-purification systems.

Filtration capability varies considerably between products.

Can air conditioning help with allergies?

Filtration may reduce some airborne particles, but performance depends on the system, filter and pollutant involved.

People with significant allergies or respiratory concerns may need dedicated air-quality solutions and appropriate professional or medical advice rather than relying solely on an air conditioner.

What's the difference between filtration and ventilation?

Filtration removes certain contaminants from air passing through a filter.

Ventilation introduces or exchanges air, usually with outdoor air.

They're different functions, and many residential split systems primarily recirculate indoor air rather than providing substantial fresh-air ventilation.

Does air conditioning bring fresh air inside?

Many common residential split systems primarily recirculate indoor air.

Some systems or installations can incorporate ventilation, but don't assume that running an air conditioner means fresh outdoor air is being introduced.

Can air conditioning cause mould?

Air conditioning itself isn't simply a cause of mould, but moisture management, drainage, maintenance and building conditions matter.

Mould growth generally requires moisture. Persistent mould should prompt investigation of the underlying moisture source rather than simply cleaning the visible growth repeatedly.

Can air conditioning reduce humidity?

During cooling, many air-conditioning systems remove some moisture from indoor air.

How effectively they manage humidity depends on system design, operation, climate and load.

Are expensive filters always better?

Not necessarily.

Higher filtration performance can also create greater airflow resistance, and not every filter is appropriate for every HVAC system. Use filtration designed for the equipment and the outcome you're trying to achieve.

Australian Climate & Air Conditioning

Does climate affect which air conditioner I should buy?

Absolutely.

A system operating through humid Queensland summers faces different conditions from one dealing with dry South Australian heat or cold winter conditions in parts of Victoria.

Climate should influence sizing, equipment selection and the relative importance of heating, cooling and humidity management.

Is air conditioning different in humid climates?

Humidity affects comfort as well as temperature.

In humid climates, moisture removal and system operation can be particularly important. Appropriate sizing matters because temperature and humidity need to be considered together.

What should I consider in very hot Australian climates?

Look beyond nominal capacity.

Consider equipment operating performance under high outdoor temperatures, correct sizing, shading, insulation and reducing heat entering the home. Extreme conditions can expose weaknesses in both the HVAC system and building envelope.

Does coastal living affect air conditioners?

Salt-laden coastal environments can accelerate corrosion of outdoor equipment.

Location, equipment selection, placement and maintenance should therefore be considered in coastal installations.

Do I need heating as well as cooling?

That depends on your climate and household.

Reverse-cycle systems can provide both heating and cooling, which can make them a practical option where both are required.

Why does my air conditioner struggle during a heatwave?

Heatwaves increase the cooling load on both your home and the system.

If outdoor conditions exceed those assumed during sizing, or the home has significant solar gain or poor thermal performance, the system may need to operate continuously and may struggle to maintain the usual indoor temperature.

Does my state affect installation requirements?

Yes. Australian states and territories have their own licensing and electrical regulatory frameworks alongside national requirements applying to areas such as refrigerant handling.

AC Wise provides location-relevant guidance, but the requirements applying to a particular installation should always be confirmed.

Using AC Wise

What is AC Wise?

AC Wise is an Australian air-conditioning guidance and matching platform.

We help homeowners understand their options before connecting suitable projects with selected independent installation partners.

Is AC Wise an air-conditioning company?

AC Wise doesn't perform the installation itself.

We're the layer between homeowner research and professional installation: helping you understand the decision, gather useful project information and connect with suitable independent businesses when you're ready.

Is AC Wise free?

Yes. AC Wise's homeowner guidance, resources and enquiry service are free for homeowners.

Participating installation partners pay AC Wise for eligible customer enquiries.

How many installers receive my details?

A maximum of two.

AC Wise's policy is to limit each enquiry to no more than two suitable installation partners. We don't broadcast your details across a large network of businesses.

Why does AC Wise ask so many questions?

Because matching based only on a postcode and phone number isn't particularly useful.

Our questionnaire helps us understand your property, project, system preferences and requirements so we can identify businesses capable of undertaking that particular work.

It also means an installer starts the conversation with considerably more context about what you need.

What if I'm only researching prices?

That's completely fine.

In fact, that's one of the reasons AC Wise exists.

Our Learn resources and cost guidance are designed to help you research your options before consuming an installer's time obtaining a site-specific quotation.

When you're genuinely ready to explore a solution for your property, that's the right time to submit an enquiry.

How does AC Wise choose its installation partners?

We deliberately keep the AC Wise partner network selective.

Installation partners undergo verification of relevant licensing and insurance. We also consider their service areas, capabilities and suitability for the types of projects we connect with them.

Does AC Wise guarantee I'll receive two quotes?

No. AC Wise's policy is to share an enquiry with a maximum of two businesses, not to promise that every project will receive two quotes.

We aim to connect you with suitable available partners for your particular project. Sometimes one business may be the appropriate match, and in some locations or specialist situations we may not yet have a suitable partner.

Can I choose which installer I use?

Yes.

A connection through AC Wise doesn't obligate you to proceed with a particular business. Review the proposal, ask questions and decide whether you're comfortable proceeding.

Does AC Wise favour its sponsors?

Commercial partnerships help support AC Wise, but they don't prevent us from discussing other products, technologies or features that may benefit homeowners.

Sponsored relationships should add expertise to the platform, not remove your ability to understand the wider market.

Why doesn't AC Wise just recommend the cheapest option?

Because cheapest and most appropriate aren't necessarily the same thing.

Our role is to help you understand the differences so you can consider price alongside system suitability, efficiency, installation scope, professional capability and long-term value.

What happens after I submit an enquiry?

We'll use the information you've provided to assess what type of installation partner is appropriate for your project.

Where suitable partners are available, our policy is to share your enquiry with up to two participating businesses so they can discuss the project with you and determine the next steps.
