What to know in Northern Territory

Climate and conditions

The Building Codes Board's Northern Territory climate map puts the Top End, including the Darwin and Palmerston area, Katherine and Arnhem Land, in the hot humid summer, warm winter zone (Zone 1). The southern Centre, including Alice Springs, is hot dry summer, warm winter (Zone 3).

  • Darwin, Palmerston, Katherine and the Top End

Zone 1, hot humid summer, warm winter

  • Alice Springs and the Centre

Zone 3, hot dry summer, warm winter

Humid heat and dry heat suit different equipment. Evaporative systems, for example, work differently from refrigerated ones, so ask installers how they matched the system to your conditions.

Licensing

The refrigerant handling licence from the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARCtick) is the one national licence requirement for refrigeration and air conditioning work. The electrical side of an installation is licensed by each state or territory. In the Northern Territory, NT WorkSafe provides the electrical licensing information.

Electricity and running costs

Energy Made Easy lists New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT, so it does not cover the Northern Territory. For running costs, use the usage rate printed on your own bill.
