How often to service
- Split and ducted systems: about every 12 months, ideally before peak season.
- Evaporative coolers: a professional every two to three years to de-scale the pads, check the pump, adjust the fan belt and set the bleed rate.
- Filters: you can clean washable filters yourself every four to six weeks in regular use.
When to book a technician now
- Unusual noises
- Weak airflow
- The system runs but does not reach the set temperature
- Water dripping indoors
- Ice on the unit or refrigerant lines
- An unexplained jump in your power bill
Each points to a fault that needs professional diagnosis. Refrigerant and electrical work must be done by a licensed technician.

Common questions
- How often should an air conditioner be serviced?
- Refrigerated systems, both split and ducted, should be professionally serviced about every 12 months, ideally before peak season. Evaporative coolers need a professional every two to three years to de-scale the pads, check the pump, adjust the fan belt and set the bleed rate.
- What can I do myself between services?
- Clean the filters. Most split and ducted return filters are washable and should be rinsed every four to six weeks in regular use, or as often as fortnightly in heavy use. Let them dry fully before refitting. Keep leaves, dirt and vegetation about 500mm clear of the outdoor unit, and rinse dusty fins gently with a low-pressure hose after switching the unit off at the isolator. Never use high pressure.
- When should I book a technician?
- Book a licensed technician if you notice unusual noises, weak airflow, the system running without reaching the set temperature, water dripping indoors, ice forming on the unit or refrigerant lines, or an unexplained jump in your power bill. Each points to a fault that needs professional diagnosis.
- Who is allowed to work on the refrigerant or electrical side?
- All refrigerant handling and electrical work must be carried out by a licensed technician. Refrigerant work requires a licence through the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC). Refrigerant, electrical, drainage and ductwork repairs are not DIY jobs.
- Does regular servicing matter for my warranty?
- Regular professional servicing is often required to keep a manufacturer's warranty valid. Check your own warranty terms for what is required.
- Does AC Wise do the service?
- No. AC Wise connects you with independent air conditioning professionals. Once we have checked your request, we can share it with up to two relevant professionals from our network, and you choose what suits you. Requesting quotes is free, with no obligation to accept a quote.
