Climate and conditions
Most of Tasmania and the Bass Strait islands are in the cool temperate NCC zone (Zone 7), with alpine areas in Zone 8. Tasmania and the ACT are both described by the ACT Government as Zone 7, a cool temperate zone.

In a climate like this, a reverse cycle system's heating performance is worth asking about as closely as its cooling. Check your suburb on the ABCB climate map.
Licensing
The refrigerant handling licence from the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARCtick) is the one national licence requirement for refrigeration and air conditioning work. The electrical side of an installation is licensed by each state or territory. Tasmania's electrical licence requirements are published by Consumer Affairs Tasmania. On 1 October 2026 the former CBOS moved to Consumer Affairs Tasmania and Building Standards Tasmania, and some information is still being moved across.
Electricity and running costs
Tasmanians can compare electricity plans on Energy Made Easy. Because heating runs for more of the year here, the rate on your bill and when your tariff charges more matter a lot for running costs.
